Springfield Celebrates Black Maternal Health Week at City Hall

Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris and Mayoral Aide Shenell Ford came together for the City of Springfield’s second annual Black Maternal Health Week celebration at City Hall.

Shenell Ford presented a mayoral proclamation on behalf of Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, officially declaring April 11–17 as Black Maternal Health Week in Springfield.

Remarks were shared by:
  • Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris
  • Laconia Fennell, Springfield Family Doulas
  • Everett Hanford, U.S. HHS Regional 1 Director
  • Kim Rivera, on behalf of Rep. Bud L. Williams
  • Judith Crowell, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer

Mayor Sarno praised Shenell Ford, founder of Heart2Heartbeat Lactation and Wellness:
“It truly takes a village to help raise a family. Events like this empower, educate, and increase awareness of the programs that support mothers and soon-to-be moms in our community.”

Commissioner Caulton-Harris added:
“Shenell is the recipient of the Commissioner’s Award for Public Health Month. Her work advancing women’s health is critical. We must Educate, Legislate, Advocate, and Agitate!”

Shenell Ford closed with gratitude:
“Heartfelt thank you to Mayor Sarno and our community leaders. I’m forever grateful to celebrate Black Maternal Health Week right here in Springfield.”
