Springfield Kicks Off Public Health Month with Honors and Community Celebration
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris launched the City of Springfield’s annual Public Health Month today at City Hall. Mayor Sarno presented a proclamation declaring April as Public Health Month, which this year is dedicated to the memory of Mable Sharif, a passionate advocate for Springfield’s public health.
The event opened and closed with prayers by Reverend Dr. Mark E. Flowers and Deacon Luis Alberto Reyes. Zelmon “Zee” Johnson recited a poem by Francis Borden Hubbard, and keynote speaker Haner Hernandez addressed the crowd. Blu Figueroa also performed a special musical piece.
In a heartfelt surprise, Shenell Ford was presented with the 2024 Commissioner’s Award, which she tearfully and humbly accepted. Shenell, an aide to Mayor Sarno, is also the founder of Heart2Heartbeat Lactation & Wellness and a dedicated member of the Public Health Council.
Sarita Hudson, Senior Director at the Public Health Institute of Western Mass, was awarded the Luminary Award in recognition of her leadership and long-standing commitment to community health.
Public Health Month in Springfield includes a full calendar of nearly 20 educational events. These programs, coordinated by the Springfield Department of Health and Human Services (SDHHS) and local partners, aim to raise awareness about public and mental health topics and provide valuable resources to city residents.
Mayor Sarno reflected on the importance of the event:
“Today’s celebration is dedicated to Mable Sharif... I believe she is smiling down on us. I deeply appreciate the leadership of Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, her staff, and all those working behind the scenes to make Springfield a healthier community.”
He continued:
“Congratulations to Shenell Ford and Sarita Hudson on their well-deserved honors. What they share is a deep care for our community — they do the work not for recognition, but because it matters.”
